City of Calgary – Safe Passing Bylaw          1 Sept 2019

The City of Calgary has been hard at work implementing a Safe Passing bylaw which came into effect on September 1st, 2019. The City of Calgary has consulted the Alberta Cycling Coalition and our white pages document during the development of these bylaws with the hopes of having a seamless transition in the future across Alberta.

It also includes updated wording on where the cyclist is required to ride while on the road, ‘As far to the right as is SAFE’ and alternate hand signals the cyclists is allowed to use which both align with our recommendations.

For a link to the changes, see the City of Calgary’s website: https://www.calgary.ca/Transportation/TP/Pages/Cycling/Cycling-Education-and-Safety/Transportation-bylaw-changes.aspx

A big THANK YOU goes out to the city of Calgary for implementing these changes ahead of the Provincial Traffic Safety Act changes.
